How to improve your concentration span
The constant barrage of notifications, social media, and readily available entertainment makes it difficult to focus on studies. Students are exposed to a wealth of information online, making it difficult to prioritise and retain critical academic content.
Identify your golden hours.
Identify your golden hours
Everyone has a time of day when their focus is naturally sharper. Experiment and see if you concentrate better in the mornings, evenings, or even during specific blocks throughout the day. Schedule your most demanding subjects during these peak focus times.
Reward yourself strategically
Instead of using breaks as pure relaxation, use them for micro-rewards that fuel further focus. Briefly practice a hobby you enjoy, do some jumping jacks, or listen to a high-energy song during your short breaks. This creates a positive association with studying and keeps your energy levels up.
Turn learning into a game
Studying doesn't have to be passive. Use flashcards with mnemonics (memory aids) you create yourself or quiz yourself online using educational websites and apps. Gamifying the process can make it more engaging and improve information retention.
Find a study buddy (with limitations)
Studying with a friend can be a great motivator but choose wisely. Set clear ground rules beforehand. Limit discussions to strictly study-related topics and agree on a time limit for explanations or breaks to avoid getting sidetracked.
Chunk information visually
Not everyone learns best through text. If you're a visual learner, try creating mind maps, flowcharts, or even short comic strips to represent key concepts. This can help you see the bigger picture and connections between different topics.
Track your distractions
Identify your personal "distraction triggers." This could be social media notifications, specific websites, or even certain sounds. Download website blockers or apps that silence your phone during focused study sessions. By understanding and eliminating your unique triggers, you proactively prevent your focus from being pulled away.
Active recall through teaching
Simulate a teaching environment. Explain the concepts you're studying to an imaginary student or record yourself explaining them aloud. This forces you to deeply understand the material and identify areas needing further clarification.
The spaced repetition technique
Don't cram information right before an exam. Instead, space out your studying over longer periods. Briefly revisit the material at increasing intervals (e.g., review key points after a day, then again after a week, then two weeks). This spaced repetition strengthens memory pathways and enhances long-term information retention compared to last-minute cramming.
